Iron Infusion
An iron infusion is a procedure where iron is given directly into your bloodstream through a vein. Receiving iron this way helps replenish your blood iron levels quickly. Read ahead to find out more!
Why is Iron important?
Iron is an essential mineral that plays a critical role in maintaining your overall health and well-being. IV iron products are used for the treatment of iron deficiency with or without anemia (IDA) or (IDWA)
Key Functions of Iron
-
Oxygen Transport: Iron is a vital component of hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to all parts of the body. Without enough iron, your cells cannot receive adequate oxygen, leading to fatigue and reduced function.
-
Energy Production: Iron supports cellular energy by aiding enzymes involved in energy metabolism. This ensures your body has the stamina and strength for daily activities.
-
Muscle Health: Myoglobin, an iron-containing protein, stores and releases oxygen in muscle cells, supporting physical performance and endurance.
-
Immune System Support: Iron contributes to a healthy immune system by supporting the production and function of immune cells.
-
Hormone Synthesis: Iron is necessary for the creation of certain hormones that regulate bodily functions.
Who might benefit from an iron infusion?
People who might benefit from an Iron Infusion include those who are more prone to iron deficiency due to increased needs or losses:
-
Individuals needing iron supplementation who are unable to tolerate oral therapy
-
Individuals who are unable to maintain iron balance even with oral therapy
-
Individuals with IDA or IDWA who have been supplementing with oral iron, but their ferritin level is still low
-
Pregnant Individuals with IDA or IDWA and who have a low ferritin (<30 ng/mL)
-
Individuals with IDA due to heavy uterine bleeding
-
Individuals with IDA or IDWA and who are symptomatic of low iron

What to expect during your Iron Infusion
An Iron Infusion is administered via a small cannula inserted into a vein in your arm (an IV). The procedure typically takes about an hour from start to finish. You are monitored closely by your Midwife, Meg, to ensure your safety and comfort. Side effects are rare but may include mild headaches, nausea, or injection site reactions.
